KEY WEST MARLIN 2023: COWBOY COWGIRL SPORTFISHING CHARTERS

The Key West Marlin Tournament of July 2023 was a resounding success for the Cowboy Cowgirl Sportfishing Charters, with our vessel, Sanctuary, securing a proud 3rd place in the Marlin division. This achievement was complemented by the impressive performance of our Cowgirl charter, which made a mark in both the Wahoo and Tuna divisions. As we reflect on this exhilarating event, we’re already filled with anticipation for the 2024 tournament.

The tournament, a cornerstone of Key West’s vibrant fishing calendar, kicked off with the captain’s meeting on July 19, 2023, followed by three days of intense and competitive fishing on July 20, 21, and 22. This prestigious event attracted about 175 anglers aboard 32 boats, each vying for top honors in a display of skill and sportsmanship.

Our team’s highlight was the Sanctuary, expertly skippered by A. J. Barry. Part of the renowned Key West’s Cowboy Cowgirl fishing fleet, Sanctuary clinched the third spot after our angler, Craig Vaughn from Richardson, Texas, released a majestic blue marlin estimated at 250 pounds. This marlin, the first offshore fish ever caught by Vaughn, was not just a catch but a symbol of the enduring spirit and thrill of deep-sea fishing.

The 2023 Key West Marlin Tournament wasn’t just about the competition; it was also a part of the annual Hemingway Days festival, celebrating the legendary author Ernest Hemingway’s literary legacy and his passion for angling. Hemingway, who lived and wrote in Key West during the 1930s, was an avid fisherman, and this tournament serves as a fitting tribute to his love for the sport.

Looking ahead, the dates for the 2024 Key West Marlin Tournament have been announced as July 17-20.
