If you’re planning a shark fishing trip in the Florida Keys, one of the first questions you’ll want answered is:
“What kind of sharks can I actually catch down here?”

The short answer: a lot.
The long answer? That depends on the season, where you fish (inshore vs offshore), and whether you’re going with a guide or on your own.

In this post, we’ll break down the top shark species you can catch in the Keys, when they’re most active, and what kind of trip to book if you want to target them.

🦈 1. Bull Shark

  • Aggressive, strong, and powerful

  • Common in inshore channels, bridges, and backcountry areas

  • Peak season: Spring through Fall

  • Often caught on light tackle shark trips in calm waters

👉 One of the most requested shark species by guests on our shark fishing charters in Key West—they’ll give you a run for your money.

🦈 2. Blacktip Shark

  • Fast, acrobatic, and hard-hitting

  • Common both inshore and near the reef

  • Often confused with spinner sharks (which jump even more)

  • Peak season: Late spring through early fall

✅ These are legal to harvest in Florida (minimum 54″ fork length), but we often do catch-and-release to preserve the population.

🦈 3. Lemon Shark

  • Found in shallow, sandy areas and along mangroves

  • Peak season: Year-round, with heavy action in summer

  • Usually docile, but strong when hooked

⚠️ Pro tip: If you’re fishing from shore, lemon sharks are prohibited from harvest. Always know the rules.

🦈 4. Nurse Shark

  • Slow-moving but heavy—often over 7 feet long!

  • Found in calm, inshore areas, often around wrecks and reefs

  • Peak season: Year-round

💡 These are great for family-friendly shark trips—big, easy to hook, and photo-friendly.

🦈 5. Hammerhead Shark (Catch & Release Only)

  • One of the most iconic shark silhouettes

  • Found offshore during late spring & early summer

  • Requires heavy gear and deep water tactics

⚠️ These are prohibited from harvest in Florida. But catching and releasing one with us? Unforgettable.
