Tiger Shark
Tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) is one of the five qualifying species in the South Florida challenge. Shark FYVE entries require catch and release.
Shark FYVE is an international catch-and-release challenge with five qualifying species per region. Cowboy Cowgirl SportFishing Charters participates from Key West in the founding South Florida region, which extends from the Florida Keys through Palm Beach County.
It is a lifetime pursuit, not a tournament or a race. Members build a record of verified catches and releases, with regional completion subject to board approval.
Membership, registration, catch submissions and progress tracking belong on sharkfyve.com. This page explains the challenge for anglers planning a Key West charter; charter arrangements remain separate from membership.

The South Florida region lists tiger shark, great hammerhead, bull shark, lemon shark and shortfin mako. Each is one qualifying entry; encounters depend on conditions, and completing the challenge is not promised on a single charter.
Tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) is one of the five qualifying species in the South Florida challenge. Shark FYVE entries require catch and release.
The official regional list identifies the great hammerhead (Sphyrna mokarran). A qualifying entry needs evidence and a documented healthy release.
Bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas) counts as one qualifying species in South Florida. Shark FYVE is a catch-and-release pursuit, not a harvest competition.
Lemon shark (Negaprion brevirostris) is part of the regional five. Follow the current regional rules and your operator’s release instructions.
The regional list identifies shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrinchus) as a release-only entry. An encounter with any qualifying species is not guaranteed.
Official species announcement pending.
The official South Florida regional page reserves a rare sixth entry for exceptional encounters. The bonus species is currently listed as “To be announced.”
Shark FYVE will confirm the species with local captains before naming it. Check the official regional page for eligibility and updates; no bonus species is guaranteed on a charter.
For anglers who refuse to stop at five
Completing a regional Shark FYVE requires five qualifying species and board approval. The official verification standard calls for photo or video evidence, operator confirmation where applicable, and a documented healthy release.
Every shark is treated with care and released responsibly.
Members submit catches on sharkfyve.com and track their lifetime progress across regions. Approved completion leads to Master of the FYVE recognition; joining or booking a charter does not automatically earn the title.
The official site offers founding memberships, catch verification, member profiles and regional progress tracking. Visit sharkfyve.com for current program details and future regional announcements.
