THE SLAY BEFORE THE STORM

Deck full of wahoo and mahi mahi caught offshore in Key West the day before a hurricane

Wahoo Frenzy Before the Storm: Offshore Fishing in Key West

The day Hurricane Ian was set to pass near Key West, most boats were securing themselves for the wind. But not us. Captain AJ and Captain Nels decided to take one last offshore fishing trip in Key West. It turned out to be an unforgettable day on the water

We started the morning trolling along the reef, staying cautious but optimistic. A few hours went by without a bite. Just as we thought about going in, one of our clients saw a pallet. It was drifting in about 250 feet of water. This was exactly the kind of floating debris that attracts pelagic fish
We headed toward it, and luckily, the reels started screaming. We caught three wahoo. After resetting and making another pass, we were hooked up again. Over the next few hours, the action didn’t let up. We caught 17 wahoo, keeping only our legal limit. We also added 12 mahi-mahi to our catch

It was a rare, adrenaline-filled day of fishing just before the storm rolled in. Our anglers were excited, and the photos show it all. Key West really offers some of the best offshore fishing in Florida, even near a hurricane
