Choose Your Shark Fishing Trip in Key West
Three distinct experiences—each with its own character, target species, and level of adventure. None is "better" than the others; it depends on what you're looking for.
Inshore Shark Fishing
$600
Our inshore trips stay in the calm backcountry waters surrounding Key West. Short boat rides mean more time fishing and less time traveling. The protected flats and channels provide stable conditions—perfect if you're prone to seasickness or fishing with younger kids.
We anchor up and set chum to attract sharks from the nearby grass flats and mangrove edges. The action can be fast when blacktips, lemons, and nurse sharks move in. These sharks fight hard for their size and provide great photo opportunities.
Best For:
- Families with children ages 6+
- First-time shark anglers
- Anyone concerned about seasickness
- Visitors with limited time
Reef Shark Fishing
$800
Reef trips take you beyond the backcountry to Key West's famous reef system. We fish near reef lines, ledges, and drop-offs where structure attracts baitfish—and the sharks that hunt them. Expect moderate boat travel and open water conditions.
The reef zone produces a mix of species you won't find inshore. Bull sharks patrol these waters year-round, and hammerheads may cruise through during the right conditions. The fights are bigger out here, and so are the sharks.
Best For:
- Anglers comfortable in open water
- Those seeking bigger sharks than inshore
- Groups wanting a balance of adventure and comfort
- Intermediate to experienced fishermen
Offshore Shark Fishing
$1,050
Our offshore trips — also known as deep water shark fishing — head into the Gulf Stream and blue water where the real monsters live. This is shark fishing at its most demanding: bigger water, bigger sharks, and bigger fights.
Tiger sharks, large hammerheads, and makos inhabit these waters. When one of these top-of-the-chain predators takes the bait, you're in for a battle that can last 30 minutes or more. This is the trip for anglers who want stories to tell.
Best For:
- Experienced anglers seeking a challenge
- Those wanting trophy-class sharks
- Adventure seekers comfortable offshore
- Groups with full-day availability

Shark Species You May Encounter in Key West
The confluence of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico creates rich feeding grounds that support a wide range of shark species. What you encounter depends on the season, water depth, and conditions on the day of your trip.
One of the largest predatory sharks in the ocean, tiger sharks are the ultimate offshore trophy and can exceed 1,000 pounds in Key West's deep blue water.
Instantly recognizable by their iconic wide-set eyes, hammerheads are aggressive fighters that patrol Key West's reef lines and offshore waters in spring.
Known for their raw power and unpredictability, bull sharks are one of the most commonly encountered species year-round in Key West's inshore and reef zones.
Blacktips are fast, acrobatic sharks that frequently leap from the water when hooked, making them one of the most exciting inshore species to target in the Florida Keys.
A stocky and powerful inshore species, lemon sharks are abundant in Key West's backcountry flats and channels and put up a strong, stubborn fight on light tackle.
What to Expect on a Shark Fishing Charter
Your trip begins with a safety briefing at the dock. Our captain explains the plan, the gear, and exactly how the catch-and-release process works. Everyone knows what to expect before we leave.
Gear Setup
We run heavy conventional tackle designed for shark fishing—stout rods, large reels spooled with braided line, and steel leaders that can handle teeth. Your captain and mate handle all rigging and baiting. You don't need to bring anything or know any knots.
The Fight & Release
When a shark takes the bait, you'll feel it immediately. The rod loads up, line peels off the reel, and the battle begins. Depending on the shark's size, fights can last anywhere from five minutes to half an hour. Our mate coaches you through the entire process.
Once the shark is alongside the boat, we secure it briefly for photos. You stay safely on the boat while the crew handles the shark in the water. After a few pictures, we remove the hook and watch the shark swim away.
Ethical Catch-and-Release
"Reel 'em in, then let 'em swim" isn't just a slogan—it's how we operate every trip. We use circle hooks that minimize injury, keep fight times reasonable, and never remove sharks from the water. This approach protects shark populations while still delivering the raw, hands-on encounter anglers travel to Key West for.
Our History of Shark Fishing Since 1965
Cowboy Cowgirl Sportfishing has been running shark fishing charters in Key West longer than most charter companies have existed. It started in 1965 when our founder hauled in a massive hammerhead shark off the reef south of Key West—an encounter that changed the direction of his life. That single catch sparked a passion for shark fishing that has been passed down through three generations of our family.
Back then, Key West shark fishing was a rough-and-tumble pursuit. There were no GPS units, no fish finders, and no braided line. You relied on local knowledge, instinct, and heavy tackle to find and fight sharks in open water. Our family learned the hard way—through thousands of hours on the water, season after season, mapping out where sharks hold in different tides, currents, and temperatures. That institutional knowledge is something no newcomer can replicate, and it is the foundation of every shark fishing trip we run today.
Over the decades, we evolved from keeping sharks to pioneering catch-and-release practices in the Florida Keys. Our owner, Mark "Sharky," developed a personal friendship with the legendary angler Jose Wejebe, host of the Spanish Fly television show. Together they shared techniques, traded stories, and helped shape the modern conservation-first approach to shark fishing in Key West. That legacy lives on through the Spanish Fly Shark Tournament, which we host every April to honor Jose's memory and promote responsible shark fishing in the Florida Keys.
When Is the Best Time for Shark Fishing in Key West
Shark fishing in Key West is a year-round activity. Water temperatures in the Florida Keys rarely drop below 70 degrees, and the mix of Atlantic, Gulf, and backcountry waters ensures there are always sharks feeding somewhere nearby. That said, certain seasons produce better action for specific species.
Spring and Summer (March – August)
This is peak season for Key West shark fishing charters. Warming water draws blacktip sharks into the shallows, bull sharks become more active on the reef, and hammerheads patrol the deeper edges as bait schools push through the channels. Summer months bring calm seas and warm conditions that make full-day offshore trips comfortable and productive. If you want the best odds at a variety of species, book between April and July.
Fall and Winter (September – February)
Fall brings cooler fronts that push bait into the harbors and channels, attracting sharks close to shore. Bull sharks and lemon sharks remain active through the winter months, and cold-front days can produce some of the best inshore shark fishing of the year. Offshore, tiger sharks and makos may be encountered in deeper water during cooler months. Winter is also the quietest time on the water, meaning less boat traffic and more productive fishing conditions. Check our seasonal shark fishing guide for a detailed month-by-month breakdown.
Who Shark Fishing Is Perfect For
Families and First-Timers
Our inshore shark fishing trips are one of the most popular activities for families visiting Key West. Kids ages six and up can reel in blacktip and lemon sharks in calm backcountry waters while the crew handles everything from baiting to releasing. Parents consistently tell us it was the most memorable part of their vacation. No experience is needed—our captains teach you everything on the boat.
Thrill-Seekers and Adventure Travelers
If you are visiting Key West looking for something beyond the typical tourist experience, shark fishing delivers. The raw power of a bull shark pulling drag or a hammerhead running 200 yards of line is unlike anything else in sportfishing. Shark tours in Key West have become one of the most talked-about adventure activities on the island, and for good reason—nothing gets your adrenaline pumping like going head-to-head with an apex predator.
Experienced Anglers
Seasoned fishermen book our deepwater shark fishing charters to test themselves against the biggest sharks in the Florida Keys. If you have a target species in mind—whether it is a large hammerhead, a tiger shark, or a mako—tell us your goals and we will build a trip around the best conditions and locations to make it happen. Our crews carry tournament-grade tackle and know the advanced techniques that produce results on big fish.
Groups and Special Occasions
Bachelor parties, corporate outings, and birthday celebrations are a natural fit for shark fishing. We coordinate multi-boat charters for larger groups so everyone fishes together. The shared experience of battling sharks creates stories and bonding moments that a typical bar crawl cannot match. Call us at (305) 304-2946 to discuss group options.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why We Offer One of the Best Shark Fishing Experiences in Key West
Most charter companies in Key West started in the last decade. We have been at it since the 1960s—same family, same docks, same obsession with putting anglers on fish. That continuity translates into something you can feel on the water: our captains don't guess where sharks hold. They know, because they have been tracking patterns across thousands of trips and every season imaginable.
Shark fishing is not tied to one specific boat in our fleet. All six of our vessels are equipped for shark trips, and the captain selects the best boat based on conditions, group size, and the type of trip you want. This flexibility is something most operations cannot offer. Whether seas are calm enough for a center console run to the reef or you need the comfort of a sportfisher for an offshore trip, we have the right boat ready.
Our crews know what sharks eat in different seasons, how tide changes affect their behavior, and which wrecks and ledges produce the most consistent action. They also prioritize safety above all else—every captain is USCG licensed, every boat carries required safety equipment, and every decision factors in conditions and passenger comfort.
Healthy shark populations keep the entire reef ecosystem in balance. That is why we release every shark we catch—using circle hooks, controlled fight times, and in-water handling that lets the animal recover quickly. You get the fight, the photos, and the story. The shark swims away strong.
If you're looking for budget options, shared fishing charters in Key West let you split the cost with other anglers on a half-day trip. But for dedicated shark fishing, private charters give you the flexibility and focused attention the experience deserves.
