Why This Tournament Matters to Us
For Cowboy Cowgirl Sportfishing owner Mark "Sharky," the Spanish Fly Tournament isn't just another competition—it's deeply personal. Mark and Captain Jose Wejebe shared a genuine friendship built on their mutual passion for shark fishing and the waters around Key West.
Over the years, they spent countless hours discussing techniques, sharing stories, and debating the best approaches to landing trophy sharks. Jose's expertise and his dedication to ethical fishing practices left a lasting impression on Mark and influenced how we operate our charters to this day.
When Jose passed away in 2012, the fishing community lost a legend. But through the Spanish Fly Tournament and the Jose Wejebe Memorial Foundation, his spirit lives on. For Mark, competing in this tournament each year is a way to honor his friend's memory, keep his legacy alive, and share the excitement of shark fishing with a new generation of anglers.
Not many charter operators can claim a personal connection to the man this tournament honors. When you fish with us during Spanish Fly, you're not just booking a boat—you're becoming part of a tradition that runs deep in Key West fishing history.
2024 — Inaugural Year
The first-ever Spanish Fly Shark Tournament was a huge success. We're proud to have competed and brought home 2nd place in the tournament's inaugural year.

2nd Place Winners — Inaugural Tournament
In the very first year of the Spanish Fly Shark Tournament, the Cowboy Cowgirl Sportfishing team competed hard and earned a proud 2nd place finish. It set the tone for what this tournament means to us — not just competition, but community and a commitment to honoring Jose Wejebe's legacy on the water.
More Than a Competition
Honoring the legacy of Captain Jose Wejebe
The Spanish Fly Shark Tournament celebrates community, conservation, and the enduring spirit of Captain Jose Wejebe. What began as a bull shark–focused event has grown into a diverse competition where teams pursue tiger, bull, lemon, blacktip, and nurse sharks—all while promoting ethical catch-and-release practices.
Thanks to a partnership with Outdoor America, the tournament is televised nationally, bringing the excitement of Key West shark fishing to viewers everywhere while sharing the message of conservation and education.
