Key West is one of the more dog-friendly destinations in Florida. The island is walkable, the weather keeps most dining outdoors year-round, and plenty of visitors travel with a dog in tow.
Rules still vary by location, so it pays to know where dogs are welcome before you arrive.
Dog-Friendly Beaches
Key West has a limited number of beaches, and dog access is not universal. Some public beaches and shoreline parks allow leashed dogs while others restrict them entirely, and county and state park rules differ from city beaches. Check posted signage at the entrance, keep your dog leashed, bring fresh water and shade, and rinse salt and sand off afterward.
Dog-Friendly Dining
This is where Key West shines. Many restaurants, bars, and cafes have outdoor patios, sidewalk seating, or waterfront decks where leashed, well-behaved dogs are welcome. Policies are set by each business rather than the city, so a quick call ahead saves a walk across town. Off-peak hours are easier on everyone when you have a dog under the table.
Getting Out on the Water
Most boat activities in Key West are not dog-friendly. Sunset sails, snorkel trips, party boats, and shared excursions generally do not allow pets, since other guests have not signed up to share the deck with an animal.
